Meet Our Team!
With a name like Kitty, it was only natural that I’d become a lifelong animal lover. I’ve never lived without animals—my journey began with Freckles, my gentle red cocker spaniel, who helped me learn to walk. Since then, I’ve shared my life with everything from cats and dogs to goats, ducks, and cockatiels.
Today, I’m the proud founder of Aunt Kitty’s Pet Sitting and co-founder of Carlsbad Cares Rescue and Animal Sanctuary, where I’ve had the joy of fostering over 300 kittens and caring for countless animals in need. I’ve worked in feral cat management, bottle-fed newborn puppies and kittens, and helped rehome animals of all kinds—including some who now happily live at our sanctuary.
My love for animals has also led me to creative work. I developed the TV pilot “Cat Talk with Kitty” and am currently writing a humorous book, The Cat Lady for the New Millennium, celebrating the joys (and quirks) of modern pet parenthood.
I’m passionate about rescue, fundraising, and connecting with fellow animal lovers. Every animal deserves a safe, loving home—and I’ve made it my life’s mission to help make that happen.
I’ve called Carlsbad home my entire life—and animals have always been a part of it. From hugging every dog I saw as a child (even if it meant the occasional bite!) to caring for horses, chickens, and even rescue rats, my connection with animals has always come naturally.
In 2023, I dove into feral cat rescue after learning about trap-neuter-release programs. That year alone, I helped over 30 cats and kittens, and soon began fostering for local shelters. My home quickly became a haven for injured and homeless animals—including cats, puppies, ducks, chickens, and a group of rescued turtles now living in what we lovingly call “Turtle Town.”
Partnering with fellow animal lover Kitty Stuart, we co-founded Carlsbad Cares Rescue and Animal Sanctuary, where I now dedicate my days to giving animals safety, healing, and love. Helping them isn’t just what I do—it’s who I am.
I was raised on a farm in Missouri a very long time ago. I’ve always had some sort of pet: dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, a skunk, ducks and chickens. I’ve raised AKC labs, and Shar Pei dogs. About 30 + years ago I got involved in the Feral Cat program which I eventually ran and continue to do. We have trapped, spayed and neutered hundreds of wild cats and taught many how to manage a healthy feral colony.
I’ve enjoyed working with the animal community and with Noah’s Ark.
Working with this program I came to realize the huge problem in our town with abuse, neglected and unwanted animals which led me to developing foster programs and teaching others how to care for these animals.
I’m excited to be a part of Carlsbad Cares Animal Rescue and Sanctuary. I know we are going to do great things for the animals here.
Presently I have 7 dogs and at least 15 cats that have found their way into my heart and home. They let me live with them, love them and buy food for them!
Nadine met her first rescue when she came prancing into her apartment one Halloween in Michigan. She didn’t want anything to happen so she kept her for few days “just in case:” Rob’s first rescue was in St. Louis during college. A mama cat had been taken by a rescue organization, but one of the kittens got away. He dug her out of a stairwell filled with salt bags, losing skin in the process from her sharp kitten claws. Unlike Nadine, he didn’t even pretend it was “just for a few days.”
Eleven cats and three dogs (all rescues) later, they joined with Kitty, Tammy, and Ann to form Carlsbad Cares Animal Rescue and Sanctuary.
“If we can give back just a portion of the love and joy that our animals give us, and pay forward what we’ve been given, it will have been time well spent.”
Hello! My name is Makenzy, and I’m a Digital Marketing graduate from eCornell University, class of November 2024. During my studies, I also developed a strong passion for web design — a skill that has allowed me to combine creativity with purpose in the most meaningful ways.
Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Carlsbad Cares Rescue, an organization whose mission and compassion truly moved me. After spending time with their dedicated team and learning about the lifesaving work they do for animals in need, I knew I wanted to contribute in a lasting and impactful way.
Coming from a family of devoted animal lovers — with everything from cats and dogs to chickens and even snakes — rescue work has always held a special place in my heart. I’m proud to say that all four of my own beloved pets are rescues, each with their own unique story and endless love to give.
Designing a new website for Carlsbad Cares Rescue was more than just a professional project — it was a chance to support a cause that aligns with my values. Knowing that this platform will help raise awareness, connect animals with loving homes, and support the ongoing efforts of such a compassionate team brings me so much joy and fulfillment.
